Book Jacket Design, Sept 2020

When designing this book jacket, I tried to take into account both the main themes of the novel and a specific plot point. Jonas first realizes he’s different when he is able to see a flash of red on an apple, whereas no one else in his society can perceive color. I thought this was significant enough to put on the cover, because it is the first moment that things begin to change for Jonas. I decided to photograph the apple outside because I wanted to focus on the idea of freedom, something that Jonas strives for in the novel. The symbolism of the apple held up to the open sky is a metaphor for Jonas escaping his choiceless society.
